The DFR team has decades of experience working with artists to translate ideas into 2D, 3D and 4D  artworks and installations. DFR's expertise in laser cutting, CNC routing, 3D printing, 3D scanning, digital embroidery, automated long arm sewing, digital textile printing, 3D prints to bronze casting and countless other processes from high-tech to traditional methods, set a foundation for creative ideas to flourish into unique artworks. We work with DFR residents to explore innovative approaches in the digital craft of making.

WHY IS DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY POWERFUL FOR ARTISTS?

    • Learn how to use the software to visualize a project idea for a grant, private commission, installation or public art proposals. Learn to render images of your proposed project in the location being proposed.
    • Work through ideas and variations in less time. Some call it fail fast, we call it learning. Every project needs to be begin with testing out ideas. Building a maquette using the laser machine before you move to a larger scale or costly material.
    • CNC processes like CNC routing and laser cutting provide a level of precision and engineering that can let the artist focus on the post production finishing. More control over professional presentation and craftsmanship in all aspects of the project.
    • Explore how digital embroidery and automated long arm sewing can be become your painting and drawing machines. From stitching on textiles to paper, felt and other materials, explore a new language of mark making.
    • Maximize the technology for efficient use of materials, weight estimates and other practical aspects of making. Create 3D printed prototypes for sculptures or elements of a object.
    • Working with a scalable platform. A digital file can be engineered to any size or scale.
    • Custom hardware, brackets or structural solutions modeled to fit the needs of the material and form.
    • 3D scan a pre-existing sculpture or environment and create a 3D object from the scan data.
    • Play. Yes, play in the software! Discover new forms in your work. Explore materials and processes from the traditional to the unexpected.
    • Build a foundation of knowledge of how digital fabrication technology is aiding artists to experiment and create in new ways. Learn about traditional and technological advancements in studio based practices with fabrication specialists.

    Onsite Residency Programs:

    3 DAY ONSITE PROGRAM

For 3 days onsite the resident learns and gain hands-on experience with laser cutting, cnc routing, resin and FDM 3D printing, digital embroidery, automated long arm sewing and 3D scanning. Applications for the 3 Day onsite residency program must include a detailed project proposal that outlines what the resident plans to work on while onsite. Residents are responsible for arranging their own accommodations, travel expenses, meals and alternative materials if projects require materials outside of those provided.

DFR works with residents in an online meetings prior to their onsite visit to figure out project needs and make sure residents can arrive and hit the ground running with their ideas. The project-based goals make the time onsite productive and rewarding. The resident can utilize the 3D fabrication studio and textile studio working directly with DFR staff to produce a variety a samples based on project-based goals. There are basic materials supplied and residents can send materials to be ready for their onsite visit. Residents can work extensively learning beside the DFR team during facility hours. After 3 days onsite the resident can add additional time at DFR studios for further idea development. Please see application page for details on residency participation fees.  Applicants must recommend their preferred dates on their application. There are no application fees to apply to our programs.

    Special 2017 Soft Sculpture Intensive

This Soft Sculpture Intensive is open to artists with beginner to advanced experience and knowledge in both the textile technology we will cover and more traditional sewing, assembling experience. This special program is dedicated to exploring a balance of traditional techniques and how technology acts as an additional helpful tool for creating fiber based works.

The 5 day intensive session will consist of daily tutorial hands-on workshops, individual project development and open studio time. There are up to 12 resident artists onsite for the Soft Sculpture Summer Intensive. Your application project proposal is critical for our planning and programing for this special intensive.

    Hybrid Program

This competitive program offers artists and designers the opportunity to spend more extensive time at DFR 3D fabrication studio and textile studio working to develop ideas and learn workflows specific to proposed project ideas and goals. Project proposals must specifically outline project goals and learning objectives. This program includes 6 scheduled days onsite for residents with rudimentary to advanced level experience with digital fabrication technology. This program is ideal for planning artworks for exhibitions and to better understand implementation of this technology for larger scale projects (i.e. museum, gallery, art fair and other professional art venues). Travel, lodging, food and project expenses for materials outside of those provided are the responsibility of the resident. Please see application page for Hybrid Program residency participation fees and more details.

What software programs are discussed in the residency? Fusion 360, SketchUp, Rhino, Modo, Z-Brush, SolidWorks, Adobe Illustrator & Photoshop, NetFab, Simplify 3D, 123 Autodesk programs, PE- Design, Embird, Vectrics Suite, Fusion 360 CAM and more...See Residency Workshop topics
