Announcement of 2016 Residency Program Dates

We are thrilled to announce some exciting new programing ahead for 2016. If you are returning to the DFR webpage, I am sure you are noticing a new look. We are always trying to find better ways to share what we do and share the amazing work of our residents. Over the last few months DFR has acquired some new technology which includes a new CNC router, Laser Cutter and 3D scanner. These are welcome additions to the machines and tools already on hand. Anytime we get a new machine the DFR team immediately starts thinking of new workflows (i.e. ways we can take ideas into realizable forms). Over the next few weeks we will be sharing some insights into transforming a 3D OBJ file so it can be sliced into layers that can then be cut on the CNC machine or router and assembled. This past summer we worked on a special project with resident MCArthur Freeman to transform one of his many digital sculptures into a size and scale new to Freeman's work using 2" foam and HD surfacing. More details and perspectives from Freeman and the DFR team coming soon!

This project is actually a perfect jumping off point to discuss where DFR is now. We began as an online only residency always with the hope that onsite visits could be organized at a later date. I am quite happy to announce that time has arrived and for 2016 we are now offering a 3 Day Onsite Residency that allows artists to work side by side with the DFR team for project based learning and project development.  Our Online/Onsite program is renamed the Hybrid Program, however the structure is still outlined by 3 weeks online working with the DFR team to develop project files, configure custom workflows and talk through ideas (Hybrid Program participants can also take part in the Online Group Workshops) after which the Hybrid Program resident is welcomed onsite to work with the DFR team, have access to machines and a private studio for 14 days. Applicants to the 3 Day Onsite Program or Hybrid Program can designate the specific dates they are applying for on the application. Our Online Residency Program continues to flourish and fit the needs of artists who can carve out a few hours for four days a week to connect with the DFR team for live streaming workshops and individual project meetings that are unique to DFR. We are very proud of the lasting community developing around the Online program.

DFR is also preparing 1 day intensive online workshops that will provide the opportunity for a small group to learn specific ways to create 2D, 3D or 4D projects. The official dates will be released soon. Topics will range from general overviews of digital fabrication technologies to specific workflows such as slicing for output to a CNC or laser cutting machine or digital embroidery. We will be sending out workshop descriptions so you can sign up for the workshop in a quick and easy way! So keep an eye on that inbox!

Well, I know if you have read this far then you want to see those 2016 dates! So here they are and if you have any questions, please let us know. Send us an email or give us a call.
